Kolkata, March 10 (IANS) A Maoist leader was killed in a gunfight with the joint security forces in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Thursday. Some TV channels reported the dead rebel was top ultra Sashadhar Mahato, but police did not confirm it yet.

“We are unable to say whether the body is that of Sashadhar Mahato. More identification is needed. Let the family members identify the body tomorrow (Friday), then we will be able to confirm this,” Jhargram Superintendent of Police Praveen Tripathi told IANS over phone.

Sashadhar, brother of arrested pro-Maoist People’s Committee Against Police Atrocities (PCAPA) convener Chhattradhar Mahato, was the foremost organiser of the guerrillas in West Midnapore district.

The police had announced a Rs.2 lakh reward for information about Sashadhar, who had been eluding the police for quite some time.

An AK-47 rifle and a magazine were found by the side of the killed ultra’s body in a village in the Jamboni area.

Tripathi said the joint forces, on receiving specific information that Sashadhar and his wife Suchitra were hiding in the area, conducted a raid and were fired upon by the Maoists.

“We returned the fire and one Maoist died and another was injured. Some other escaped. We are combing the area,” he said.
