Maoist leader arrested, sent to police custody

Kolkata, Jan 24 (IANS) A local court in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Monday sent an arrested Maoist leader to 14 days police custody, police said.”Kaliram Soren, a Maoist squad member active in Binpur area, was arrested Sunday night and presented before the Jhargram court Monday afternoon. The court has remanded him in police custody for 14 days,” said West Midnapore’s additional superintendent of police (operation) Mukesh Kumar.

“Earlier we arrested a member of Binpur squad - Swapan Hansada, who revealed Kaliram’s name during interrogation. Acting on specific inputs, we rounded up Kalicharan from Jhatira village in Jhargram,” Kumar told IANS over phone.

“Kaliram was a landmine expert. He knows all the dos and don’ts in making landmines and was involved all the landmine blasts that were triggered by the ultra-Left rebels in Binpur area. He was also accused in several cases and three arrest warrants were pending against him,” he added.
