Maoist held for extortion in West Bengal
November 11th, 2010 - 9:44 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Nov 11 (IANS) A Maoist guerrilla was arrested from West Midnapore district of West Bengal Thursday for extorting money from local school teachers and businessmen, police said.
“Acting on a tip off, we conducted a raid and arrested Amol Mahato. Four of his accomplices managed to flee,” West Midnapore additional superintendent of police (operation) Mukesh Kumar told IANS over phone.
The operation was conducted in Mohanpur area of Jhargram sub-division of the district, Kumar said, adding that a firearm and Rs.43,000 were recovered from the rebel.
“We are interrogating Amol for the whereabouts of his gang,” Kumar said.
“Several extortion complaints have been lodged against these Maoists,” he added.
Maoists are active in three western districts of the state - West Midnapore, Purulia and Bankura.
