Maoist dissidents call Nepal closure Tuesday
May 23rd, 2011 - 6:47 pm ICT by IANSKathmandu, May 23 (IANS) Dissidents who broke away from Nepal’s ruling Maoist party have called a nationwide shutdown Tuesday demanding an end to foreign intervention and the bifurcation of the republic into autonomous federal states.
Led by former Maoist minister Matrika Prasad Yadav, who was stripped of his parliament seat by the mother party, the dissidents’ general strike is being supported by six ethnic organisations.
The new closure call comes at a time when Nepal is reeling under a spate of general strikes and other disruptive protests.
On Sunday, the biggest community of Nepal, the Khas Chhetris, had called a 48-hour strike in Kathmandu valley.
However, after paralysing the valley Sunday, the Chhetri Samaj Nepal, the organisers of the strike, lifted it in the valley Monday and instead enforced it in eastern Nepal.
The Maoist dissidents have also threatened to declare an indefinite strike if the new constitution is not ready by May 28.
