Maoist arrested in Bengal
February 12th, 2011 - 7:49 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Feb 12 (IANS) A Maoist squad member, wanted in several cases, was arrested in West Bengal’s West Midnapore district Saturday, police said.”Sagar Baskey, a member of Sashadhar Mahato’s squad, was arrested this morning from Helakata area near Binpur of Jhargram sub-division. Later, he was presented before Jhargram court and remanded in police custody for five days,” Jhargram Police Superintendent Praveen Tripathi told IANS.
The rebel was wanted in at least seven cases, including two of murders, he said.
Baskey was an active member of the squad of Mahato, one of the second rank Maoist leaders who spearheaded the Lalgarh movement. The squad was active in the Binpur area.
The Maoists are active in three western districts of the state - West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia.
