New Delhi, Jan 18 (IANS) Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Sunday left many officials surprised as he personally went to the regional transport office (RTO) to get his driving licensed renewed - like any other citizen.Manmohan Singh went to the RTO office at Indraprastha, near the Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) headquarters, around 11.15 a.m. and met Transport Commissioner R.K. Verma and other senior officials, according to sources in the Delhi government.
Manmohan Singh, 76, was accompanied by his wife Gursharan Kaur and security officials. Gursharan Kaur also got her licence renewed. Special arrangements were made for this Sunday in view of security as on weekdays the office has much rush of the people, officials said.
He produced the mandatory medical fitness certificate and got himself photographed for the new licence. He also gave his digital fingerprints, which are a must for the new biometric licence.
He spent nearly 30 minutes at the RTO office.
According to the Motor Vehicle Act rules, people above the age of 45 years have to get their driving licence renewed every five years.
Manmohan Singh had got his driving license from the same RTO office in 1992 when he was the finance minister in the government of P.V. Narasimha Rao.
Earlier, his license was renewed in 2003. He went to renew his licence under the stipulated time of 45 days of expiry of his licence.
