Manipuri youth held with banned substance worth Rs.2 crore

New Delhi, April 4 (IANS) A Manipuri youth linked with an northeast militant group was arrested here with 200 kg of ephedrine, a banned substance used in manufacturing stimulants such as the ecstasy drug, worth Rs.2 crore, police said Monday.

“Nepoleon Thockchom was arrested from Samalakha village area in south Delhi while he was going to Indira Gandhi International Airport on April 1,” said Deputy Commissioner of Police Arun Kampani.

His cousin and associate Robindro, who is suspected to be a key person of banned terrorist organisation Kangleipak Communist Party (Military Council) Lalihba group, is on the run.

The police said the contraband was to be smuggled to China and Myanmar.

The officer added that the profits were to be used by the militant group to fund their activities.

Police recovered 200 kg of ephedrine in 20 cardboard boxes packed in small polypacks of 500 grams each. “Ephedrine is in high demand in China for manufacturing of narcotics,” said Kampani.

“We received information that Thockchom and Robindro had come to Delhi from Manipur to collect ephedrine. We laid a trap and apprehended Thockchom,” Kampani said.

“They had, earlier, sent consignments of this drug on two occasions to Manipur,” said Kampani.

Thockchom also told police that he came to the capital March 23 along with Robindro and the two were staying in a hotel in Gurgaon in Haryana.
