January 18th, 2012 - 9:54 pm ICT by IANS ( Leave a comment )Chandigarh, Jan 18 (IANS) Haryana Police Wednesday launched a manhunt in the state and neighbouring areas after eight inmates, all of them accused of heinous crimes like murder, escaped from the prison in Sonipat town.
The jail-break came to the notice of prison officials Wednesday after the barracks of inmates were checked.
Following the incident, prison authorities placed prison guards under suspension and registered a case against them. Involvement of some jail staff in the jail-break is not being ruled out by the authorities.
Deputy Superintendent of Police R.S. Saini said the prisoners cut the iron grille with an iron saw and jumped out of the jail complex by scaling a 20-foot high wall. They used a rope to climb the wall, he said.
Sonipat is 200 km from Chandigarh.
