Man rescued from drainage pipe
November 22nd, 2011 - 12:25 pm ICT by IANSWashington, Nov 22 (IANS/EFE) A 25-year-old man who tried to cross into the US illegally through a drainage pipe had to be rescued Monday near the estuary of the Tijuana River south of San Diego, authorities said.
Agents located the immigrant when he was inside the pipe near the protected ecological zone of the estuary, between the Pacific Ocean and Interstate 5, said Michael Jimenez, an official.
The drainage tube descends some 12 feet and at its smaller end is almost 3 feet wide, but due to the rain Sunday night the immigrant could not get through it because it was full of water, Jimenez said.
He found himself trapped, even unable to climb back up to where he entered, until he was eventually rescued by firefighters and emergency managment personnel, after which he was taken to a hospital before being processed by the Border Patrol for deportation back to Mexico.
