The incident took place at village Oraimura, in Raigarh district, some 220 km from capital Raipur.
According to the preliminary police investigation, Santosh Manjhi, 40, lost his temper on a minor family issue and went on a killing spree. He first murdered his three children - two daughters and a son, all below ten years of age - with a sharp edged weapon and then his wife and his sixty-year-old mother. Majhi then committed suicide by hanging himself.
“The incident has shocked about 250 village residents who said the accused was addicted to liquor but had no criminal background,” Gorakhnath Baghel, a local police officer, told IANS on phone.
