Man killed as old shell explodes in Punjab

Jalandhar, June 13 (IANS) One person was killed and two others were seriously injured when an old anti-aircraft gun shell exploded at village Daria Walla in this Punjab district Monday, police said.

Avtar Singh, who bought the shell from a scrap dealer, was killed. He had been carrying it in his tractor’s tool box for a long time, police said.

“Today, Avtar tried to use this shell to repair the gear box of the tractor. He was hitting the shell when it exploded. He died on the spot,” said Senior Superintendent of Police, Jalandhar (rural), Ashish Chaudhary.

“Avtar Singh’s brother Balwinder Singh and a youth sustained serious injuries. Both of them are out of danger. Avtar Singh bought the shell from a scrap dealer based near the IAF (Indian Air Force) firing range here. We have informed the defence authorities about the incident,” he added.
