Man kidnapped in Delhi, police sceptical

New Delhi, Nov 23 (IANS) A 28-year-old man was kidnapped from central Delhi for a ransom of Rs.25 lakh, police said Wednesday, adding that the episode was suspicious as the victim managed to call the police while he was being dragged into a car by four men.

Rohit Alawat, resident of Paschim Vihar in west Delhi, worked as an assistant at a legal firm in Bahadur Shah Zafar Marg. He went to his office Monday, but never returned.

Late Monday night, Alawat’s father received a ransom call of Rs.50 lakh, but after long negotiations, the kidnappers agreed for Rs.25 lakh, a police officer said.

Alawat’s father, who is a lawyer, registered a police complaint Tuesday, following which the police formed three teams to trace the victim.

However, police are suspicious about the kidnapping claim as the victim apparently managed to call the police while he was being dragged into a car by four people.

Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Aslam Khan told IANS that Alawat phoned the police late Monday and said that he was walking towards Lok Nayak Hospital from his office when a car stopped near him and four people dragged him inside.

“Whether he has been kidnapped or has staged it is matter of investigation,” a senior police officer said.
