Man held for threatening suicide attack on Dakshineswar temple
October 17th, 2009 - 6:00 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Oct 17 (IANS) A 22-year-old man was arrested Saturday for allegedly sending an e-mail on the Kolkata Police blog threatening a suicide attack to blow up the famous Kali temple at Dakshineswar in West Bengal’s North 24 Parganas district, police said.
“The mail was received at the Kolkata Police blog last (Friday) evening. We started tracking down the mail and the youth was picked up from Howrah this (Saturday) morning,” West Bengal Inspector General of Police (Law and Order) Surajit Kar Purakayastha told IANS.
North 24 Parganas Superintendent of Police Rahul Srivastava said the youth Arup Karmakar was being interrogated to ascertain the motive behind sending the mail.
“Prima facie it appears that he sent the mail about the suicide attack only as a prank. But we want to look into all angles,” Srivastava said.
He said Karmakar had just been released after spending a month in jail in a domestic violence case following a complaint filed by his wife.
The mail had sent police into a tizzy as the famous temple draws thousands of devotees On the occasion of Kali Puja, which is being observed in this part of the country Saturday.
Srivastava assured devotees that all measures have been taken to provide security.
