New Delhi, June 23 (IANS) A 19-year-old youth was arrested Saturday for murdering a minor boy whom he kidnapped for Rs.5,000 ransom, police said.

Vinod Kumar, a labourer, was arrested from a park in Badli area in north Delhi for the murder of Rounak, 5, his neighbour.

According to police, Rounak was kidnapped June 14 from his home in Raja Vihar near Badli.

His father Rajbir Singh lodged a complaint when the boy failed to return home from the playground.

“On June 16, Rounak’s sister Rukmani told us that she received four calls demanding Rs.5,000 as ransom. We traced the call and found that the number was registered in name of Ramji,” a police official said.

“We found that the SIM card of that number was stolen from Ramji by Vinod Kumar, who was a resident of the same building as the boy,” he added.

Following a tip-off, police nabbed Vinod Kumar. Upon sustained interrogation, he confessed kidnapping the boy on the pretext of buying him biscuits and then killing him.

“Since he had no place to keep the abducted boy, Kumar smothered him and threw the body in a drain. After a search, the victim’s body was retrieved,” a police official said.
