Man arrested for snatching foreigner’s bag

New Delhi, Nov 11 (IANS) A 25-year-old man was arrested in south Delhi for snatching a a Spanish tourist’s bag. He was arrested while trying to sell her belongings, police said Friday.

Hemant Sharma, a resident of Ghaziabad in Uttar Pradesh, was arrested Thursday for snatching the bag of Patricia C. Antonaya, a Spanish national, outside the Old Delhi Railway Station.

“On the night of Aug 20, Antonaya along with her friend was on her way from Old Delhi railway station to ISBT in a rickshaw when Sharma came from behind and snatched her bag and fled in an auto-rickshaw,” a police officer said.

The police have recovered a Nikon camera worth Rs. 90,000 and the victims’ passport and credit cards.

According to police, Sharma was arrested while trying to sell the victim’s camera near the Sai temple in Lodhi Colony.

“He revealed that he and his three friends were all drug addicts and started committing snatchings and thefts to sustain their addiction,” the officer added.

One of his associates — Salman — drives an auto-rickshaw and the gang would use it for robbing passengers.

“While Salman drove the rickshaw, rest of them followed and would attack the passengers at the right moment, robbing them or snatching their bags,” the officer said.

Sharma was arrested in a theft case in 2007 by the Uttar Pradesh Police and remained in judicial custody for eight months.
