Kolkata, July 20 (IANS) West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee Wednesday invited the Maoists for talks to help restore peace in Junglemahal, assuring that her government would announce a rehabilitation package for those rebels who want to lay down their arms.
“Come, let us talk, help in restoring peace. Let us all work together for development. Those comrades who still misunderstand me, please come back to the mainstream,” Banerjee appealed to the Maoists.
She said her government was sympathetic and humane.
“My government has a sympathetic approach. My administration is humane. All those who are game for peaceful dialogue, believe in humane behaviour, and prepared to shun force and firearms, I tell them that our government will announce a package for all those who surrender in Junglemahal,” Banerjee told reporters.
Junglemahal consists of Maoist-dominated forested stretches of West Midnapore, Bankura and Purulia districts.
The chief minister said her government was prepared to extend help to all Maoists - even those now in jail - who want to lead a normal life after their release. “If they face any financial difficulty in running their families, we will help them if they appeal to us.”
Banerjee said once peace returned in Junglemahal, her government would take more decisions to put the area on the path of progress.
“Those who want people’s development, even if you are against me ideologically, I won’t belittle your commitment. You can fight with me ideologically,” she said.
