Maldives leaders vow smooth transition of power

Male, Oct 30 (Xinhua) The Maldives’ incumbent President Maumoon Abdul Gayoom, who lost the island’s first multi-party elections, and president-elect Mohamed Nasheed have said they would cooperate to ensure a smooth transition of power.In a joint press conference held in the President’s Office Wednesday, Gayoom said he accepted the will of the people and congratulated Nasheed and his Maldivian Democratic Party (MDP) on winning the run-off election held Tuesday.

“I want the transition to be a very smooth one. I will do whatever possible to cooperate with him (Nasheed) to ensure everything goes smoothly,” Gayoom said.

He said he has also appealed to his party members to work closely with the MDP in the transition of power.

Nasheed also stressed that he will “ensure the public and the international community that the transition to democracy in the Maldives would be smooth”.

Nasheed said Gayoom will play an important role in the future of the nation.
