Make Yoga part of school education: Plea in Delhi High Court
August 4th, 2010 - 10:29 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 4 (IANS) The Delhi High Court Wednesday issued notice to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (HRD) and the NCERT seeking reply on a public interest litigation (PIL) which seeks making yoga part of health and physical education in schools.
A Division Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Mishra and Justice Manmohan sought their replies by Sep 22.
Filing the petition, J.C. Seth, an academician, said there was an urgent need to make yoga (science of breathing and asanas) part of compulsory education in schools as there were more than 2,000 schools run by the central government here.
Seth informed the court that through an RTI application, he received information from the HRD ministry that it has decided to nominate National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) as the academic authority for laying down the national curriculum.
Seeking a direction to the ministry to notify the national curriculum, the petitioner said although the ministry had assured to consider it but nothing has been done so far.
