March 30th, 2012 - 12:08 am ICT by IANSKolkata, March 29 (IANS) A major fire broke out on the 10th floor of a multi-storied building in South Kolkata’s posh business hub of Chowringhee Thursday evening. It was extinguished after an hour, the fire department said.
Ten fire tenders were pressed into service and brought the blaze under control after an hour-long firefight.
“The fire which broke around 8.30 p.m. is now under control. There were no casualties. People from inside the building were safely evacuated. Evacuation was an easier job as most of the offices had downed their shutters by 8 p.m.,” Fire Services Minister Javed Khan, who visited the site, told the media.
He also said the department will investigate the cause of the fire.
The multi-storied building is located opposite the Birla Palnetarium and houses several important offices.
