Chandigarh, Jan 18 (IANS) A major fire broke out in the furniture market near the Chandigarh-Mohali border late Sunday evening, the police said. No casualties have been reported in the blaze. There are around 40 shops selling furniture and mattresses in the market.

Ten fire brigade vans have reached the spot and the firemen are trying to douse the flames.

“We are trying our best to control the fire, but the presence of combustible material like wood and mattresses is making our job difficult,” a fire brigade officer said.

A police officer present on the spot said: “The reason behind the fire could not be ascertained yet, but there might be a possibility of electric short circuit”.

“There has been no loss of life, as most of the shops were closed today,” the police officer said.
