New Delhi, Sep 2 (IANS) Mahindra United became the fourth team to qualify for Durand Cup semi-finals after a 1-1 draw with Churchill Brothers on the concluding day of the quarterfinal league stage Tuesday.In the second match, Army XI defeated Mumbai FC 1-0 with S. Raeleng striking in the 37th minute.
With the draw, defending champions Churchill Brothers, who had already qualified for the knock-out stage emerged toppers in Group I with six points followed by last years runners-up Mahindra at second with five points.
Mahindra needed a draw to qualify for the semis but were put on the backfoot as early as in the eighth minute after Reisangmi Vasum’s curling left footer gave Churchill the lead.
But disaster struck for Churchill after central defender Gourmangi Singh was red carded in the 27th minute for a dangerous tackle.
Down to 10-man, Churchill kept the Mahindra attack at bay till the 75th minute when the Mumbai outfit fired in the equalizer from a header by Edeh Chidi, who was set-up by Ajayan Nair’s cross.
In the first semi-final Thursday, JCT take on Mahindra Sporting Clube de Goa face Churchill in the second semifinal Friday
