Karachi, Feb 22 (IANS) Skipper Mahela Jayawardene and Thilan Samaraweera closed in on their double centuries in the first innings as Sri Lanka continued to pile up more misery for Pakistan on the second day of their first cricket test at the National Stadium here on Sunday.

Resuming at the overnight score of 406 for three, Sri Lanka continued to score freely against a seemingly toothless Pakistan attack, adding another 99 runs in the first session off 30 overs to reach a healthy 505 for three at lunch.

Jayawardene, who started the day at 136, raced to 185 off 338 balls with the help of 24 fours.

Samaraweera, who was unbeaten at 130 overnight crossed his previous best (148) and was perfectly placed to score his first double hundred at 177 off 238 balls with 25 hits to the fence.

The pair has already added 328 for the fourth-wicket which is the highest partnership for any wicket at the National Stadium.

Pakistani bowlers were unable to extract any life from the pitch and Sri Lanka now seem set for a mammoth total that will almost end any chances Pakistan has of winning this match.
