Magistrate sang Hindi song before delivering Bofors verdict
March 4th, 2011 - 9:01 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, March 4 (IANS) Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Vinod Yadav looked unusually cheerful when he walked into the packed courtroom to deliver the Bofors verdict. So even before he could sit on his high chair, the young magistrate, known for his charm, softly sang his favourite Urdu poet and lyricist Sahir Ludhianvi’s song.
“Voh afsaana jise anjaam tak laana na ho mumkin, Use ek khoobsoorat mod dekar chhodna achchha (It’s better to leave on a beautiful note a story that cannot be brought to an end)”, Yadav sang as he sat down.
The song is from the famous Hindi movie “Gumrah”. The words are at the end of the song that begins with “Chalo ek baar phir se, ajnabi ban jaye ham dono (Lets become strangers once again.)”
He then gave the judgment to close the Rs.640 million kickbacks case related to the 1986 Bofors gun deal on a plea by the Central Bureau of Investigation, dropping criminal charges in one of the country’s biggest scandals against Italian businessman Ottavio Quattrocchi, whom India has repeatedly failed to extradite.
Reading out the operative portions from his 73-page verdict, Yadav, 40, kept smiling throughout even as mediapersons and lawyers fought for space in the small courtroom in Tis Hazari.
