May 7th, 2011 - 8:16 pm ICT by IANSLucknow, May 7 (IANS) Residents of a locality in this Uttar Pradesh capital fought pitched battles with police, resorted to arson and targeted several government vehicles while protesting an anti-encroachment drive Saturday, officials said.
The angry mob indulged in heavy brickbatting and torched many hoardings to hinder demolition of illegal establishments during the drive that was undertaken jointly by the Lucknow Development Authority (LDA) and the Lucknow Municipal Corporation (LMC) in Daliganj area.
Police attacked protestors with batons when they tried to set afire jeeps, dumpers and cranes of the civic agencies.
“We resorted to force only after the locals turned unruly. The situation is still tense, but under control,” police inspector P.K. Singh told reporters here.
“In the wake of the violent protests, additional security has been deployed in the area,” he added.
The drive was carried out to free the encroached area that is to be used for construction of roads.
