New Delhi, May 2 (IANS) In a shocking incident, a Class 12 student and her 32-year-old lover immolated themselves here Monday after killing the girl’s mother as she was opposed to their relationship, police said.

The incident took place in Jaitpur area of south Delhi.

According to police, Soni, 21, and Rajkumar Dhankhar were in love and wanted to marry each other. However, Soni’s mother Baby Singh, in her 40s, objected to their affair as Dhankhar was already married and had two kids.

Dhankhar had approached Soni’s parents several times to persuade them to agree to the marriage.

“Seeing Dhankhar hell-bent on marrying Soni, her parents fixed her marriage. The marriage was due on June 22 and the girl’s family was supposed to go to Bhagalpur in Bihar later this month,” a senior police officer said.

“When Dhankhar got to know about Soni’s scheduled marriage, he reached her home in the morning and found that her father Anant Singh was out for work. Soni and her mother were present,” the officer said.

“Dhankhar had an altercation with Baby. In a fit of anger, Dhankhar and Soni started thrashing her and attacked her with a sharp-edged object. After killing her, both of them burnt themselves by pouring kerosene,” the officer added. The neighbours called the police after hearing the commotion.

The police rushed them to the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS), where doctors declared all the three dead.

The bodies have been sent for autopsy.

Dhankhar was working as a parking lot operator in Delhi and lived in Jaitpur.
