Agra, Aug 10 (IANS) A love-struck couple’s bid to end their lives by jumping into the Yamuna river here was foiled by bystanders, the police said Sunday. The couple - Vimal, 32, and Deepika, 22 - had been on the run for four months. Fed up with opposition to their marriage, they decided to end their lives Saturday by jumping into the river from the Jawahar bridge. But people on the bridge prevented them from committing suicide.

They had met four years ago when Vimal had gone to Lucknow for coaching. Deepika was doing an airhostess training course there. They married in an Arya Samaj temple in Aligarh. Their family members were opposed to the marriage.

Vimal said that the village panchayat had socially ostracised his father because of the wedding. He claimed that Deepika’s father had hired musclemen to kill them and lodged a case of kidnapping against him.

The police said a case of attempt to commit suicide would be registered against the couple.
