Locals clash with police over death of worker
May 5th, 2011 - 11:29 pm ICT by IANSMoradabad (Uttar Pradesh), May 5 (IANS) Tension prevailed here Thursday after a mob fought pitched battles with the police, torched vehicles and damaged public property after a sanitation employee was crushed to death by a municipal corporation vehicle.
Demanding arrest of the erring driver, the mob indulged in heavy brick batting and torched the dumper, some private vehicles and government hoardings in Kathgar town.
Jatan Prasad, aged around 22, was Thursday crushed to death by the dumper of Moradabad Municipal Corporation.
Police had to baton charge the protesters to disperse them. “We resorted to force only after the mob became unruly. However, no one was seriously injured in the incident,” police inspector R.P. Tyagi told reporters in Moradabad, some 250 km from Lucknow.
“The situation is still tense, but under control. In the wake of the violent protests, security has been strengthened in the area,” he added.
