Lightning strike kills 5 in Jharkhand village
October 3rd, 2008 - 10:09 pm ICT by IANSRanchi, Oct 3 (IANS) Five people were killed and four others injured Friday evening when lightning struck a hut in which they had taken shelter in a Jharkhand village, the police said. The incident took place in Kambo village, about 40 km from here.
According to the police, nine people took shelter in the hut with a roof made of paddy husk.
The lightning struck the hut and five people died on the spot while four were injured.
The injured have been admitted to a hospital.
This year lightning claimed over 55 lives in the state. In 2007, the total number of deaths due to lightning was 68.
The Jharkhand government has written to central government to include lightning as a natural calamity.
According to an official of the disaster management department of Jharkhand, Rs.100,000 will be paid to the families of each of those killed in the lightning strike sd.
