LeT operative Madni sent to seven-day police remand
June 19th, 2009 - 7:25 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, June 19 (IANS) A city court Friday sent suspected Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT) operative Mohammed Omar Madni, an alleged recruiter for the terror outfit, to seven days’ police remand.
Metropolitan Magistrate Manish Yaduvanshi sent Madni to Delhi Police custody till June 26.
Madni was arrested June 4 near Qutub Minar in south Delhi, and presented to court by the special cell of Delhi Police. His 14-day custodial interrogation period ended Friday.
According to police, Madni hails from Madhubani district of Bihar. His was a recruiter for the banned militant outfit and he provided training to recruits in the Pakistan-occupied Kashmir.
The police sought his further remand on the ground that he had disclosed links of the LeT with banned Maoist organisations in Jharkhand.
Details about his e-mail account and monetary transactions were yet to be ascertained, police told the court.
The police also contended that they needed to take Madni to various places in Uttar Pradesh and Rajasthan.
According to police, Madni was assigned the task of liaisoning with members of the outfit based in Bangladesh and he had visited that country thrice for this purpose.
Madni admitted to police that he had recently received over $30,000, apart from fake currency nominally worth Rs.1 million, for distribution among LeT modules in India, the court was told.
Of this amount, he gave $12,000 and Rs.500,000 of fake currency to an operative identified as Ahmad in Patna, and $10,000 and Rs.450,000 of fake currency to an operative, Saleem, in Aligarh.
