Left Front demands high-level probe into hospital fire
December 10th, 2011 - 12:09 am ICT by IANSKolkata, Dec 9 (IANS) Expressing shock and grief over the AMRI Hospital fire which claimed 88 lives, West Bengal’s Left Front Friday demanded a high-level probe into the incident and called for exemplary punishment for those found guilty.
Terming the tragedy as unprecedented, Left Front chairman Biman Bose in a statement said: “An immediate and holistic high-level probe is warranted in the incident and those found guilty should be given exemplary punishment.”
The Left Front will also observe Dec 10 as a day of mourning to pay respect to the victims of the tragedy.
Former chief minister and Communist Party of India-Marxist (CPI-M) leader Buddhadeb Bhattacharjee also expressed grief over the incident and called for a through probe. He urged the authorities concerned to prevent the recurrence of the tragedy.
Earlier, CPI-M’s Surjya Kant Mishra, who is also leader of opposition, visited the SSKM Hospital where the bodies of those dead in the tragedy were handed over to the families after post mortem.
In the worst fire tragedy in any hospital in India, 88 patients and staffers were killed in the city’s AMRI Hospital when a blaze engulfed its annexe building early Friday, trapping dozens of helpless patients while many doctors and others fled to safety.
