September 17th, 2009 - 10:12 pm ICT by IANSGhaziabad, Sep 17 (IANS) Normal life was affected in 16 districts of western Uttar Pradesh as a lawyers’ strike, demanding a high court bench for the region, entered its third day.
The lawyers had declared a three-day strike from Sep 15 to press their demand.
“The agitation passed off peacefully and we got a lot of public support during three days,” said Ankur Nagar, President of the Gautam Budh Nagar Bar Association.
Vehicles remained off the road and rail traffic was also disrupted in Ghaziabad district. Shops, business establishments, medical stores, and petrol pumps remained shut during the day.
The lawyers abstained from work in courts at Gautam Budh Nagar and Ghaziabad districts.
Protests were held in Noida-phase II, Dadri, Jewar, Khurja, Surajpur and Bhangel areas of Gautam Budh Nagar.
Trains were halted for 15-20 minutes at New Ghaziabad railway station by the striking lawyers.
“The response was phenomenal and traders associations and panchayats also supported our cause. There would be a meeting on Sep 19 at Gautam Budh Nagar where the future course of action would be decided,” said Shiv Dutt Tyagi, president of Ghaziabad Bar Association.
