Lawyers plan strike Wednesday on Hazare’s arrest

New Delhi, Aug 16 (IANS) Proceedings in Delhi courts are likely to be hit with lawyers in all the six district court complexes deciding to strike work Wednesday to protest the arrest of anti-corruption activist Anna Hazare, an advocate said.
“We will hold a complete strike in all the local courts to support Anna’s cause and also to oppose the prime minister’s statement that the judiciary should not come under the Lokpal,” said Rajiv Khosla, spokesperson of Co-ordination Committee of all Bar Association of Delhi.
Prime Minister Manmohan Singh while addressing the nation on the 65th Independence Day, Monday said that the judiciary should not be under the Lokpal, he said.
Khosla said: “It is strange that despite rampant corruption, the government is supporting the exclusion of the judiciary from the purview of the Lokpal,” he said.
By arresting Anna, the government was violating the fundamental rights of the people, he said.
Khosla did not blame Delhi Police alone for arresting Hazare, saying “they cannot function on their own, they function in accordance with the government’s directions”.
Hazare was Tuesday arrested and sent to Tihar Jail as Delhi Police moved to stop his fast-unto-death to press for a strong anti-corruption Lokpal bill.
