Lawyers on nationwide strike against CrPC amendments
February 18th, 2009 - 11:53 am ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Feb 18 (IANS) Lawyers across the country went on a day-long strike Wednesday to protest amendments to the Criminal Procedure Code (CrPC) that abolish the provision of arrest in offences punishable with up to seven years in jail.
“Lawyers across the country are striking work in protest against the amendment. The lawyers of Delhi High Court will go on a hunger strike and over 20,000 lawyers from all over the nation are likely to join them,” said Rajesh Kumar Wadhwa, leader of the lawyers’ coordination committee.
The lawyers are likely to take out a protest march from Patiala House court to parliament.
The amendment proposes that in offences that carry jail terms of seven years a police officer may, instead of arresting the offender, issue him/her a notice requiring him/her to cooperate in the investigation.
No arrest will be made in a non-cognisable offence except under a warrant or order of a magistrate. The reasons for arrest should be sound and recorded in writing by the police officer, the amendment proposes.
