Lawson criticises CA’s selection policy
November 28th, 2011 - 7:49 pm ICT by IANSSydney, Nov 28 (IANS) Former Australia pacer Geoff Lawson has lashed out at Cricket Australia’s (CA) selectors for leaving out young pace sensation Pat Cummins from the first Test against New Zealand.
Lawson has criticised the selection panel led by John Inverarity’s for its “inappropriate” injury management strategies, reported the Sydney Morning Herald.
Lawson, the former coach of Pakistan, questioned the rotation policy of the team,
Cummins was one of five players ruled out last Friday for the first Test against New Zealand, starting Thursday in Brisbane, as CA look to protect the rising star’s long-term future.
Uncapped Ben Cutting, David Warner, Mitchell Starc and James Pattinson were named in Australia’s squad for the first Test against the Black Caps in Brisbane.
Lawson said: “Cummins, 18, needed more bowling in order to build his strength and become more resilient. Why is he not playing this Test match? A sore heel? And that’s going to stop him from bowling?”
“He needs to keep bowling, so he’ll do no bowling and his heel will get a little bit better by Hobart so he’ll come out and bowl again, will he? That’s when he’s in line to get an injury.”
“The failure of these people to admit they haven’t got it right is one of the biggest problems in Australian cricket,” Lawson added.
“The failure to have experts dealing with fast bowlers is a major problem to their injury status. The Argus report said all those failures should be addressed and they haven’t been. Why aren’t they taking any notice of the Argus report?”
