Cairo, Sep 6 (Xinhua) At least 20 people were killed Saturday and 23 injured in a landslide on the eastern outskirts of the Egyptian capital, security sources said.Rescue teams rushed to look for survivors of the landslide in the El-deweiqa area that levelled a number of shanties, official Mena news agency said.
Boulders, weighing up to 70 tonnes, destroyed some 30 houses at the foot of the Muqattam hill burying an unknown number of people raising fears that the toll could be much higher.
According to witnesses, the landslide occurred at about 9.00 a.m. (0700 GMT) and dozens of houses were hit by the boulders.
The injured were rushed to hospitals. Residents of the neighbouring areas have been evacuated for fear of more landslides.
