Landmines found in Bengal’s West Midnapore
June 23rd, 2011 - 8:57 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, June 23 (IANS) Two landmines were found in West Bengal’s Maoist-hit West Midnapore district Thursday, police said, adding that the explosives were later defused.
“The landmines were found in the Simulpal area under Belpahari police station,” said Inspector General of Police (Western Range) Zulfikar Hasan.
Locals became suspicious on seeing a length of wire and informed police, who discovered the landmines.
“The bomb squad personnel were called and they defused the landmines,” Hasan said.
Asked whether Maoist rebels were involved, Hasan said: “Investigation is on. Before that nothing can be said.”
However, another police officer said there was the possibility of a Maoist link. “Only they have the capability to plant such landmines.”
