Land scam: Court seeks Bihar government’s response

Patna ,Oct 18 (IANS) The Patna High Court Tuesday directed the Bihar government to file its response to a public suit seeking a probe in an alleged scam of land allotment to the family members of ruling alliance’s leaders.
The court fixed Jan 17, 2012 for the next hearing.
The petition, filed by a local lawyer, said that the government had allotted factory plots of the Bihar Industrial Area Development Authority (BIADA) to the sons and daughters of Janata Dal-United (JD-U) and Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leaders at throwaway prices and demanded a Central Bureau of Investigation probe.
According to the BIADA website, the government agency that allots land for industrial units, it has given 87,120 square feet of land to the daughter of Human Resource Development Minister P.K. Shahi.
It also gave 15,500 square feet land to Janata Dal-United MP Jagdish Sharma’s son and 87,120 square feet land to the daughter of Social Welfare minister Perveen Amanullah who is the wife of senior Indian Administrative Service (IAS) officer Afzal Amanullah, it says.
A close relative of former BJP legislator Awdhesh Narayan Singh got 21,7800 square feet while BJP legislator Ashok Agarwal’s son Saurabh Agarwal was given two huge plots, it says.
When the land scam came into light earlier this year, the opposition demanded a CBI probe and under attack, Chief Minister Nitish Kumar ordered a probe by a senior government official.
