Lakhimpur-Kheri girl’s parents demand CBI probe (Lead)

Lucknow, June 15 (IANS) Within hours of Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Mayawati’s declaration that she was not averse to entrusting the case of a 14-year old girl’s alleged rape and murder inside a police station premises to CBI, the girl’s parents formally demanded an investigation by the premier probe agency into the incident.
The girls was strangulated to death after being allegedly gangraped by cops posted at Nighasan police station in Lakhimpur-Kheri district, about 200 km from here, on June 10.
Both the girl’s father, Intezar Ali and mother Tarranum, raised the demand through a letter addressed to Lakhimpur-Kheri Congress MP Zafar Ali Naqvi.
The letter was forwarded to the district magistrate together with a covering note from Naqvi seeking a CBI inquiry. A copy of the letter was faxed to the chief minister and the director general of police as well.
Earlier in the day, Mayawati had announced at a press conference that she had no hesitation in handing over the case to the CBI, “in case the victim’s family members so desire”. However, as a word of caution, she had added, “my ony apprehension is that the CBI may end up goofing up the case just as they did with Aarushi Talwar case.”
The victim’s parents sought to point out in the letter that they have no faith in any investigating agency other than the CBI.
The formal demand by the parents has shaken the state administration, as the Lakhimpur-Kheri district magistrate Sameer Verma and superintendent of police Amit Chandra rushed to Nighasan and speak to the girl’s family members.
