Lacklustre Inter Milan win playing one man downSeptember 14th, 2008 - 6:26 pm ICT by IANS
Milan, Sep 14 (DPA) Two own goals allowed Italian champions Inter Milan to come from behind for a 2-1 win with 10 men against guests Catania in the Serie A football league.Inter played Saturday’s second half without Ghana’s Sulley Muntari, but even when playing with 11 men lacked the grit to prevail on the gritty defence of the Sicily visitors steered by Walter Zenga, a former star goalkeeper who played 473 games with Inter.
Two missed headers from Zlatan Ibrahimovic and one from Mario Balotelli were Inter’s occasions in the first 15 minutes of hammering attacks.
As the dominance from Jose Mourinho’s squad left virtually no room for any tactics from Catania, Muntari had a drive deflected and a close-range effort saved on the half hour by Catania’s Argentinian goalkeeper Albano Bizzarri.
The first serious attack from the Sicilians, however, proved fatal to Inter on 42 minutes as striker Gianvito Plasmati nodded home, connecting with a good cross at the end of a good action on the left flank.
Inter’s equaliser came just one minute later through Giuseppe Mascara’s unlucky deflection of a cross from new Portuguese arrival Ricardo Quaresma.
The dismissal of Muntari in the 45th minute, when the midfielder slapped Giovanni Tedesco, seemed to favour the guests’ chances to take home at least one point.
That Inter were in for a lucky day became clear three minutes into the second half as they took the lead through another own goal, this time having to thank defender Christian Terlizzi for nodding past Bizzari.
There were no serious threats from Catania in the remainder of the game, while Inter came close with Nicolas Burdisso’s goal-mouth blunder and a dangerous action from Douglas Maicon, who fired wide after storming through the defence.
Two last chances went begging for Ibrahimovic, who played the game slightly below his par and in the dying minutes was denied by a reactive Bizzarri.
In earlier action, Palermo also came from behind through a brace from Fabrizio Miccoli and goal from Edison Cavani to stun powerhouse Roma 3-1.
