Kolkata, Dec 30 (IANS) A youth in Kolkata who murdered his old neighbour Dec 18 for Rs.500, which he needed for a trip to the popular sea resort of Digha in West Bengal, was arrested Tuesday.Somen, 24, was arrested for murdering Namita Guha, 77, at her Narkeldanga residence in north Kolkata Dec 18, a police official said, adding the youth has confessed to his crime.

Guha was found dead inside her three-storey house at Narkeldanga Dec 18 evening. The ground floor was ransacked and two of cupboards were found open. Though initially the police suspected robbers, they zeroed in on Somen after interrogating a youth living in the area.

Somen first denied any involvement in the crime, but later broke down and said he had planned a trip to Digha with his family and needed Rs 500 to fund his share.

Knowing that Guha lived alone, Somen entered her house to steal some money. However, Guha saw him and afraid that she would tell everyone, he strangled her to death, the police officer added.

After committing the crime, Somen ransacked the house, breaking open two cupboards in an attempt to make the police think that it was robbers who committed the crime. After that, he fled with whatever cash and jewellery he could lay his hands on.
