Kolkata, June 18 (IANS) City dwellers had a harrowing time Saturday as several parts of Kolkata remained waterlogged following heavy rainfall since Thursday night in the city and other southern West Bengal districts.

Many areas of Kolkata such as Kidderpore, Mominpore and Topsia are facing heavy water logging, causing inconvenience to people.

Uprooted trees and fallen hoardings caused long traffic snarls at several key road crossings in the city. Over 140 trees were uprooted in the rains.

The Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) has dispatched several teams to clear the roads.

Over 450 pumps have been working continuously to remove the water from the roads, an official said.

“Some areas are still heavily waterlogged, but many areas have already been cleared. The work is being done on a war footing,” Arnab Ray, commissioner of KMC, said Saturday.

Various parts of Dum Dum, Kalindi and Bangur are also waterlogged since Thursday.

“There will be rainfall in various parts of Kolkata and other parts of south Bengal. But the intensity will not be so high as Friday’s rainfall,” said G.C. Debnath, director of West Bengal Met department.
