Kolkata police seizes mobile phones, SIM cards from jail

Kolkata, Jan 25 (IANS) At least six mobile phones and three SIM cards were seized by the police here Sunday from the inmates of the Alipore Central Jail, a police officer said.”We have confiscated half a dozen mobile phones, three of them with SIM cards. We also stumbled upon mobile chargers and hemp,” Additional Director General (prisons) B.D. Sharma told reporters.

He said some undertrials were using mobile phones inside the jail premises. Also, DVD players, DVDs, a pair of scissors and tin sheets were seized.

“The detective department has started a probe into how such items could be sneaked in. We are not ruling out involvement of insiders. We will probe all angles,” he added.

The raids were conducted in ward numbers seven, eight and nine of the central jail.
