Kolkata blaze: ‘Dead’ woman found alive
December 10th, 2011 - 8:35 pm ICT by IANSKolkata, Dec 10 (IANS) In yet another goof-up by the AMRI Hospital, a person who was declared dead in the initial list of victims was Saturday found to be alive. The toll in Friday’s fire stands at 90.
Eighty-seven years old Aparna Chatterjee’s name was initially listed among the 28 dead, but after 24 hours of search, she was found safe.
Aparna’s daughter Banani reached the hospital in the early hours of Friday after hearing about the fire but could not find her mother.
In the meantime, rescuers had shifted Aparna to the main building of the hospital.
“My mother’s name was there in the list of the dead. At around 10 p.m., I got a call that my mother has been shifted to the main building,” said Banani.
In the worst fire tragedy in any hospital in India, 90 patients and staffers were killed in Kolkata’s well-known AMRI Hospital when the blaze engulfed its annexe building early Friday, trapping dozens of helpless patients while doctors and others fled to safety.
