Kobad Ghandy sent to police custody (Lead)
October 5th, 2009 - 8:49 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Oct 5 (IANS) A city court Monday sent arrested Communist Party of India-Maoist (CPI-Maoist) leader Kobad Ghandy to three days’ police custody.
The Delhi Police contended before the court that they need to interrogate him and wanted to take him to Mumbai to cross-check certain facts to proceed further in the case.
Police also informed the court that Ghandy was living under false names and was working to set up a Maoist base in the national capital. The police said that they have recovered CDs and a laptop from Ghandy.
“I am of the opinion that the custodial interrogation of the accused is essential. Therefore, he is remanded to police custody till Oct 8,” Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Kaveri Baweja said.
The 63-year-old London-educated Ghandy was arrested here Sep 21 though his party says he was picked up by police four days earlier Sep 17. The top Maoist leader was in judicial custody till Oct 5.
Talking to reporters before the hearing Ghandy said: “I think it is an exaggeration of the state that the person who writes for Maoists can be termed as a big catch.”
