Kirti Azad mans Delhi traffic, more ex-crickters to follow

New Delhi, March 21 (IANS) Cricketer-turned-politician Kirti Azad joined traffic officials to man the capital city’s traffic Monday and advised commuters to drive safely.
The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader, who was a member of the 1983 World Cup winning team, managed traffic at Durgesh Nandini Chowk at the ITO in Central Delhi as part of Delhi Police’s road safety programme.
“He advised and scolded a biker for not tying his helmet’s strap and admonished a doctor for not wearing the seat belt,” said a senior traffic police official.
Azad along with Joint Commissioner of Police Satyendra Garg and Deputy Commissioner of Police Sanjay Tyagi educated the commuters and distributed pamphletes on road safety.
“He reminded them there is a family waiting at home, so drive safely and follow rules,” said the official.
More former cricketers are to follow suit.
Former cricketer Bishen Singh Bedi will man traffic at the Indian Institute of Technology in south Delhi Tuesday and Madan Lal will be at Laxmi Nagar Wednesday.
“Kapil Dev, Maninder Singh and Surender Khanna are also likely to join us soon. After the World Cup is over, Virender Sehwag and Gautam Gambhir will be part of the campaign,” Garg told reporters.
