Kirori Mal College to take strict action against two for ragging
August 3rd, 2009 - 1:04 pm ICT by IANSNew Delhi, Aug 3 (IANS) Authorities at Delhi University’s Kirori Mal College Monday said they would take stringent action against two of its students accused of ragging a junior in the hostel and would take up the matter with the police as well.
The college authorities received a complaint from a first year student, Ashutosh, that he was being ragged and sexually harassed by two third year students — Akshay Chaudhary and Hani Mohammad — in the college hostel Sunday evening.
The college has called an immediate meeting of its disciplinary and anti-ragging committee to decided the future course of action.
“The victims reported (the matter) to the hostel warden Sunday evening and we have asked the victim and the students accused of ragging to appear before the disciplinary committee Monday,” Principal Bhim Sen Singh told reporters here.
Taking moral responsibility for the incident, Singh said: “It is a very serious case. I have recommended expulsion of both the students and the college will lodge a complaint against them with Delhi Police. I will ensure toughest possible action against them for it will set an example to other students not to dare ragging juniors.”
The victim has shifted out of the hostel and is staying with his local guardian, he said.
The college has sealed the room where the incident took place so that any possible evidence is not tampered with.
Delhi University’s current academic session started July 16 with Delhi Police along with university authorities trying to implement tough anti-ragging measures.
Deputy Commissioner of Police Sagar Preet Hooda said anything that leads to or is even remotely seen as promoting ragging will not be condoned.
During the past year, the country witnessed 88 cases of ragging of which 12 were fatal.
