Kerala media houses face action for airing narco test footage (Lead)
September 23rd, 2009 - 8:57 pm ICT by IANSKochi (Kerala), Sep 23 (IANS) A Kerala court Wednesday decided to initiate action against 17 media organisations for telecasting and reporting narco-analysis tests conducted on an accused in the Sister Abhaya murder case despite warnings.
The Ernakulam chief judicial magistrate decided on action against seven TV channels here and 10 newspapers following a petition from Mathew Joseph, brother of Sister Seffi who is the third accused in Abhaya’s murder.
The video clips of the narco-analysis tests done on the three accused were aired Sep 14. The court will now take up the matter for hearing Oct 5.
The body of Sister Abhaya, a resident of the Pius X Hostel, was found in the well of the Kottayam convent March 27, 1992.
The first accused is Thomas M. Kottor, who was the diocesan chancellor of the Catholic Church at Kottayam; the second accused is Jose Putarika, a former professor at the Kottayam College where Abhaya studied; and the third accused is Seffi, a resident of the convent where the incident took place.
