Sydney, Dec 17 (IANS) Renegade veteran Simon Katich has called up national selector John Inverarity to check whether his name was mentioned in a selection meeting before the Boxing Day Test.

The 36-year-old rang Inverarity in response to reports that suggested he was being considered for a shock recall to open the batting at the Melbourne Cricket Ground against India. Katich is in Western Australia preparing for his first match with Big Bash League team Perth Scorchers.

“Simon has placed a call-in to the chairman of selectors to see what’s going on but they’ve been playing phone tag,” Robert Joske, Katich’s manager, was quoted as saying by the Herald Sun.

The daily reported that Thursday’s discussion between members of the five-man selection panel may have raised the left-hander’s hopes but now it is understood Katich is at long odds to make an unlikely return.
