Kashmir shivers in freezing temperatures
November 26th, 2011 - 2:51 pm ICT by IANSSrinagar, Nov 26 (IANS) Kashmir Valley shivered in the winter chill Saturday as the minimum temperature dropped below freezing point.
In summer capital Srinagar, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 0.2 degrees Celsius while the north Kashmir ski resort of Gulmarg saw minus 2 degrees.
“For the first time this season, the night temperatures throughout the valley fell below the freezing point,” Sonam Lotus, director of the local weather office, told IANS here.
The Leh town in the Ladakh region recorded a bone chilling minimum of minus 10 degrees.
In south Kashmir’s Pahalgam hill station, the minimum temperature was recorded at minus 3.6 degrees, minus 2.2 degrees in south Kashmir’s Qazigund town and minus 0.2 degrees in north Kashmir’s Kupwara town.
“Kargil recorded minus 5 degrees,” Sonam Lotus said.
Lotus said the prevailing cold and dry weather conditions would continue till the end of this month and the night temperature would fall further across the valley and the Ladakh region.
“We are expecting light snowfall Dec 2 which would bring up the night temperatures. Till then, the night temperatures would continue to dip because of clear night skies,” Lotus said.
