New Delhi, July 6 (IANS) Union Home Minister P. Chidambaram Wednesday said the past six months have been the most peaceful in Jammu and Kashmir during the past decade and strict vigil is on to check cross-border militant incursion in the state during summer.
Talking to reporters here, the home minister said there has been no terror related incident in the country’s hinterland in the past six months and that violence in Jammu and Kashmir and northeastern regions has also dropped considerably.
“As far as the first six months of this year are concerned, there has been no incident of terror and no casualty in the hinterland. In Jammu and Kashmir, we are keeping a vigil,” he said.
He said the security forces were on alert to check any possible attempts of militant infiltration from Pakistan in Jammu and Kashmir.
In the terror-riven state of Jammu and Kashmir there have been 168 violent incidents this year as compared to 254 for the first six months last year, said the home minister.
He said that in northeastern states the level of terror has come down sharply as compared to the corresponding period last year.
Thirty-four civilians were killed in 286 incidents this year. Last year, 42 civilians were killed in 365 incidents of violence in northeastern states, he said.
Violence in Maoist-affected areas has also decreased to an extent. There were 203 incidents as compared to 338 last year, he said
